Careers In Government, Inc. is seeking a Water Operations Technician for the Houston Public Works & Engineering division to collect regulatory samples in the drinking water distribution system and treatment plants.

You will analyze data, monitor water quality, and assist contractors with sample collection and hydrant flushing. The role requires coordination with labs, customers, and other operators, with occasional overtime or weekend work.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
Two (2) years of plant operations experience are required.
Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
Requires a valid Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class "C" Water. Certificates must be appropriate to position location, such as surface water, groundwater, distribution, or wastewater treatment.

Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Collect regulatory compliance samples in the drinking water distribution system and drinking water treatment plants. Collects, analyzes and monitors data relevant to maintaining water quality in the distribution system. Compares readings with established operational ranges to evaluate system performance. Assists contractors with collecting regulatory samples. Conducts flushing at fire hydrants and investigates valves to verify distribution system operation. Interfaces with customers and provides assistance with selecting and evaluating sample locations. Communicates and coordinates work with contractors, laboratory staff, and other operators by telephone and e-mail. Work consists of reviewing and complying with standard procedures and tasks where analytic ability is required. Performs other duties as requested. Some overtime and weekend work is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position requires lifting of heavy items of up to 60 pounds and/or walking on rough surfaces routinely and/or regular physical exertion such as climbing of ladders. There are frequent exposures to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of a short-term disabling nature, such as broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing.

This is a Houston Public Works & Engineering position at the Tier III Level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a high school diploma or a GED certificate.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Two (2) years of plant operations experience are required.

Preference will be given to the applicants who have distribution system operations experience.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
