Job summary

Allegheny County Department of Human Services is seeking a Housing Specialist within the Office of Community Services to assist individuals transitioning from emergency shelters and homeless housing programs. You will help prevent homelessness, support housing applications, and coordinate with CoC providers and DHS data systems to maximize housing stability for those most in need.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of local, state and federal housing resources and how to access them.
• Knowledge of resources to stabilize housing such as mediation, utility and rental assistance programs.
• Knowledge of the county’s homeless system and related services.
• Experience conducting searches for affordable housing.
• Knowledge of tenants’ rights and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct assistance to resolve housing crises for individuals.
• Perform preliminary eligibility screenings for publicly and privately funded programs.
• Serve as subject-matter expert on housing types, application processes, and listings resources.
• Assist households with paperwork and becoming document-ready for housing.
• Review leases and explain tenant rights and responsibilities.
• Complete assessments for homeless housing services and supports.
• Advocate on households’ behalf when needed and empower self-advocacy.
• Engage individuals respectfully and maintain confidentiality.
• Track supports provided and participate in team meetings and trainings.
• Identify opportunities to improve processes and address service gaps.
