Job summary

SMA Healthcare is seeking a Psychiatric Residency Liaison to manage relationships between our mental health facility and partner hospitals. You will facilitate communication and coordination of psychiatric services, ensuring seamless patient referrals and transitions of care.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a human services field and a minimum of 1 year experience in mental health. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential. This role is based in Town of Florida, NY.

Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice as a Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, or Marriage and Family Therapist preferred.

HCA & SMA Psychiatric Residency Liaison

Will serve as the primary relationship manager between the mental health facility, partnering hospital, and psychiatric residency training programs. This role facilitates seamless communication, coordination of psychiatric services, patient referrals, care transitions, and educational collaboration with psychiatric student residents. The Liaison works closely with hospital leadership, psychiatrists, behavioral health teams, residents, and facility staff to enhance patient outcomes, support residency training experiences, and strengthen strategic partnerships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Hospital Partnership & Clinical Coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact between the mental health facility and partnering hospitals.
  • Coordinate psychiatric admissions, referrals, transfers, and discharge planning.
  • Facilitate communication among hospital physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, case managers, and facility staff.
  • Monitor patient flow and identify opportunities to improve access to behavioral health services.
  • Assist in resolving service concerns and operational issues between partner organizations.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and care coordination discussions.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives related to psychiatric services and patient outcomes.
  • Identify barriers between facilities to address and navigate, according to the psychiatric facility exclusionary criteria.
  • Psychiatric Residency Program Support: Coordinate clinical rotations, schedules, and learning opportunities for psychiatric residents and student trainees.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor regarding facility policies, procedures, and clinical expectations.
  • Collaborate with residency program directors, attending psychiatrists, and educational coordinators.
  • Facilitate orientation and onboarding activities for psychiatric residents.
  • Monitor resident engagement and communicate feedback to residency leadership.
  • Assist with educational activities, case conferences, grand rounds, and clinical training opportunities.
  • Ensure residents maintain compliance with facility requirements, documentation standards, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Relationship Development: Develop and maintain strong working relationships with hospital administrators, physicians, residency faculty, and community stakeholders.
  • Promote awareness of facility programs and psychiatric services.
  • Participate in outreach efforts, partnership meetings, and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Represent the facility professionally during hospital visits, educational events, and community engagements.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Maintain accurate records related to referrals, admissions, resident participation, and partnership activities.
  • Ensure adherence to HIPAA, Joint Commission standards, residency program requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Prepare reports, utilization data, and performance metrics for leadership review.
  • Assist with accreditation and educational program evaluations as needed.
Minimum Education and/or Experience

Graduation from an accredited school with a bachelor's degree in a human services field with a minimum of 1 year of work experience in a mental health related field required. Master's degree in a human services field or psychiatric nursing preferred. Licensed to practice as a Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, or Marriage and Family Therapist preferred. Currently Certified or working toward certification as an Addictions Professional or Criminal Justice Addictions Professional in the State of Florida preferred. Must complete a course in emergency screening prior to or within 3 months of assuming emergency screening responsibilities.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license, acceptable driving record, and proof of personal automobile insurance if required to drive an SMA vehicle and/or use a personal vehicle for SMA business. Complete State of Florida mandatory background screening prior to start of employment. Complete SMA required training during the first six (6) months of employment and updated if required.

Physical

Mobility and ability to bend and reach during an 8-12 hour day. Able to lift minimum 10 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to evaluate, intervene, treat, and record client health care needs. Fine motor skills for legible and accurate writing of reports, charting, scheduling, daily correspondence and presentation. Work endurance ability to work an 8 to 13 hour day with a lunch break as possible. Routine 8 to 12 hour shifts. Hours and days off may vary. Weekend and after hour coverage will be required. Extra hours/rotation of shift may be required. On call duties will be required.
