County of Ventura is seeking an Air Conditioning/Heating Mechanic to perform installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems at the Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital. The role involves coordinating preventive maintenance, interpreting schematics, and working with other trades on large projects.
The position requires journeyman experience or a related certificate, willingness to lift up to 50 lbs, and a valid CA driver’s license.
Under general supervision, performs complex and skilled installation and repair of modern refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating equipment and related control systems across the Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital.

Air Conditioning/Heating Mechanic is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) and is eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed Term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy.

These are the entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
Considerable experience in air conditioning and heating installation and repair which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. The required knowledge, skills and abilities may be obtained by:
Thorough knowledge of: modern mechanical refrigeration systems, including specialized refrigeration systems for both refrigerators and freezers; modern air conditioning and heating systems (gas, electric, and water heating and cooling systems); chemical treatment for boilers, hydronic cooling and heating systems and cooling towers; control systems used in modern refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning systems; record-keeping; time management in order to complete assigned work/fulfill responsibilities; safety regulations; safe driving practices and traffic laws; and building management systems.
Working ability to: diagnose and repair problems in modern refrigeration, air conditioning and heating systems and their related control systems; lift up to 50 pounds; perform major overhauls to these systems and their components; use and understand reference and technical manuals and interpret complex schematics and drawings; properly and safely use tools and materials of the trade; operate specific office equipment to fill out required forms and establish and maintain machinery history; operate a motor vehicle; and establish and maintain effective working relations with others.

An un-proctored, internet-based, job-related written exam will be administrated the test applicants’ knowledge of Modern Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating Systems Principles for successful performance on the job. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
Applicants successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for up to a period of one (1) year.
A thorough pre-employment, post offer background investigation which may include inquiry into past employment, education, criminal background information and driving record may be required for this position.
