Job summary

Boston Children’s Hospital is seeking a dedicated kitchen assistant to support inpatient dining, cafe and catering services. You will open the kitchen, prepare meals, follow recipes, and ensure timely delivery to patient rooms and service areas.

The role requires 5:30 am to 7:30 pm shifts, every other weekend/holiday, and strong knife skills, food safety practices and customer service. High-school diploma and culinary experience are needed.

Qualifications

• Must have culinary skills experience (High school Trade program or work experience).
• Proper use of knife with basic knife skills (slice, dice, rough chop).
• Comprehension of weights, measures, recipe conversion and portion control to minimize waste.
• Analytical skills to gather and interpret data in routine situations.
• Customer service skills with ability to exchange information on factual matters, schedule appointments, greet visitors, explain hospital policies, and relay messages to appropriate personnel.

Responsibilities

• Opens kitchen in the morning and accepts early deliveries from vendors. Prepares breakfast items for patient room service, cafe and catering. Receives and logs employee sick or late calls.
• Under supervision, prepares all soups, entrees, vegetables, starches and other related items based on cafe/diner, room service, and catering menus
• Follows standardized recipes and daily production sheets and accurately records amounts produced. Tests food for quality, appearance, flavor, temperature, texture, and doneness
• Delivers all food products to designated serving areas in an established time frame and at required temperature
• Completes next day's preparation assignments
• Follows guidelines for age-specific feeding and specialized diets including Diabetic, Ketogenic, BMT, Sodium Restricted and Low Fat; supports patient-related food services
• Follows and monitors HACCP food prep and storage procedures. Adheres to hand washing, hair restraints, cooling/reheating, and taste testing policies
• Stores, holds and transports cold food at 40°F or below and hot food at 140°F or above; records temperatures
• Wraps, labels, and dates all food items; uses FIFO principle
• Cleans and sanitizes all food contact surfaces and equipment; logs sanitizer ppm; prevents cross-contamination
• Maintains sanitation of equipment; follows dept policies, Health Dept codes and JCAHO regulations
• Follows department safety standards to minimize hazards and accidents
• Contributes to a positive work environment; communicates clearly with staff, patients and visitors
• Trained on at least 1 station (retail or patient)
