Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine is seeking a Cleaner responsible for cleaning hospital rooms, coordination of adjacent grounds, and maintaining a sanitary environment. You will follow established procedures, ensure safety, and support a high standard of cleanliness across areas within Environmental Services.

The role requires physical capability, effective communication, and solid time management; hospital experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Required: physically able to perform the tasks of the position and to communicate effectively to obtain and convey information.
• Preferred: previous experience in a hospital setting; possess excellent intrapersonal skills, time management, and attention to detail; able to work with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Washes floors, corridors, stairs and other areas using cleaning equipment and supplies.
• Collects, transports and disposes of medical waste or spoiled linens per procedures.
• Strips and waxes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets; dusts assigned areas.
• Cleans lavatories and locker rooms; maintains fixtures and surfaces.
• Polishes furniture and equipment; moves furniture as needed.
• Removes hazardous articles and places them in designated receptacles per guidelines.
• Sets up cleaning carts and prepares/dilutes cleaning solutions according to manufacturer directions.
• Wears appropriate protective clothing and equipment and reports malfunctions.
• May perform snow removal and lawn maintenance as needed.
• May work in labs, clean rooms, or clinical settings requiring high levels of cleanliness.
