Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• At least 1 year hospital registration or relevant experience.
• Knowledge of Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMOs, PPOs, and other medical insurances.
• Familiarity with EMTALA and HIPAA regulations.
• Basic computer skills (word processing, e-mail, internet).
• Bilingual in Spanish or Tagalog preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interview patients in person or by phone to obtain information for hospital records and billing.
• Register or pre-register scheduled patients for admission, partial hospitalization, and outpatient services.
• Obtain bed assignments and inform nursing staff; monitor patient comfort during wait times.
• Obtain signatures on registration and explain Advanced Directives, Privacy, Ethnicity, Medicare, Medi-Cal, and Tricare as necessary.
• Verify insurance coverage and obtain authorization for services; follow guidelines when authorization is unavailable.
• Prepare charts and paperwork; place identification wristbands and adhere to patient identification procedures.
• Determine upfront payment or deposit based on third-party coverage and process payments; maintain records.
• Screen patients for Medi-Cal or hospital financial programs and enroll in plans as appropriate.
• Collect and disburse valuables envelopes after verifying patient or family ID.
• Perform clerical tasks: answering phones, filing, faxing; assist with hospital bills and payments.
• Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA; follow department policies for registration quality.
• Demonstrate problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
• Promote SRH values to patients, visitors, and physicians.
