Position Summary:

Responsible for the 24-hour operation of the Hospice Department in collaboration with department leadership, including planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating direct and indirect patient care. Assumes major responsibility for day-to-day operational affairs, including the financial health of the Hospice Department. May provide skilled nursing care when staffing requires supplementation. Serves as a key leader for hospice services, ensuring compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements. Maintains a high level of professional expertise, supports staff development, and fosters a culture of quality, compassion, and accountability. Assists with marketing and community outreach, and ensures Hospice contracts are reviewed and updated annually.

  • Maintain a strong knowledge base of current hospice and nursing practices.
  • Lead with focus on quality, performance, and productivity.
  • Resolve conflicts effectively and foster open peer communication.
  • Ensure compliance with all hospice regulations and standards.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Apply sound judgment in clinical and operational decisions.
  • Develop, write, and update policies and procedures.
  • Assess departmental quality, including patient care outcomes and financial performance.
  • Lead conferences, staff meetings, and educational in-services.
  • Organize, prioritize, and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Respond to emergencies and conduct patient assessments as needed.
  • Provide patient and family education and support.
  • Utilize computer systems frequently for documentation and reporting.
  • Hire, train, coach, counsel, and evaluate staff.
  • Oversee orientation for new employees and promote professional growth.
  • Drive safely to patient homes and community sites.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education & Licensure:
  • Current Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
Experience:
  • Minimum two (2) years of management experience required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of budgetary responsibility required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working with the medical and psychosocial needs of terminally ill patients or equivalent education.
  • Valid driver’s license and insured vehicle required.
