Job Summary

The Horticulturalist participates in a diverse range of activities involved in landscape and golf course maintenance including daily clubhouse cleanup, landscape bed management and upkeep, daily cleanup and first impression preparations around clubhouse as well as course preparation, mowing, equipment operation, water management, etc. The Horticulturalist will primarily be tasked with maintaining landscape around the clubhouse, pool, and golf course, and when time permits will be asked to help with golf course maintenance.

Pay Rate: $18-$20 per hour.

Principal Duties
  • Demonstrates and proficient in landscape and horticulture management.
  • Safely and effectively operates landscape management equipment.
  • Designs landscape installations, proposes future orders, and finalizes plant orders annually.
  • Completes pesticide and fertilizer applications to keep plants healthy and free of pests or decline.
  • Safely and effectively operates fertilizer equipment.
  • Safely and effectively perform all chemical and fertilizer calibrations.
  • Records, organizes, and maintains all landscape chemical and fertilizer inventory throughout the year.
  • Works with the Superintendent in ordering all plants and landscape supplies.
  • Safely and effectively operate all utility vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists in basic training of new employees and daily tasks.
  • Safely and effectively water all beds and pots throughout club.
  • Must participate and complete all Basic Safety Training Programs.
  • Performs all fall leaf removal and winter snow removal.
  • Participates in golf course projects including renovations, aerifications, drainage, tree removal, and construction.
  • During the off-season, performs all necessary winter repairs and paints course and tournament paraphernalia as directed by management.
  • Perform daily cleaning tasks necessary to keep the maintenance facility clean, organized and safe.
  • Inspect all machines and report any deficiencies to the Equipment Manager.
  • Wear uniform properly.
  • Required to wear personal protective clothing and/or use protective equipment to comply with established safety operating standards.
  • Follow guidelines in the golf course maintenance operations manual for each specific task.
  • Perform other functions and routine golf course maintenance activities as directed by the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Golf Course Superintendents.
  • Perform any other tasks requested by the management or the Club.
Physical, Mental And Visual Skills
  • Good organizational skills and good verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to follow oral and written directions and work in cooperation with fellow employees.
  • Safety consciousness and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to visually inspect landscape conditioning and club house grounds.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work; may be required to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 20 pounds constantly. Perform such activities as bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping for up to five hours without sitting.
  • Dedication to personal improvement and course advancement.

  • Work habits include regular attendance, teamwork, initiative, dependability, positive attitude, and promptness.
  • Must be able to work holidays and weekends as these are the busiest times for the golf course.
Educational, Development And Work-Related Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent education required.
  • Certificate or degree in horticulture or similar field.
Working Conditions
  • Works primarily outdoors on golf course and clubhouse grounds.
  • May experience the following:
    • Carbon monoxide fumes from various equipment.
    • Work in the elements (Rain, Snow, Cold, etc.).
    • Various insects, compounds, and plants (example poison ivy).
    • Electrical outlets and wiring.
    • Grease and oil on equipment and shop floor.
    • Hot hydraulic fluids.
    • Potentially damaging noise levels.
    • Dirt, dust, and grass clippings.
    • Flying golf balls.
    • Load/transport 50 pound fertilizer and seed bags.
    • Move benches short distances that may weigh 25-50 pounds.
    • Potential exposure to pesticides, herbicides, dangerous chemicals and solvents and fertilizers if proper safety procedures are not followed.
