Primary Purpose Of Position
Are you looking for a dynamic work environment where you can grow and make an impact? The North Carolina Museum of Art is seeking a
Horticultural Technician to join our team in maintaining and enhancing the Musuem's Park's landscapes. The
Horticultural Technician will be responsible for the care and continued development of gardens within the Museum Park. Garden maintenance including preserving the beauty, health, and safety of the gardens will be paramount.
Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
- Responsibility for the cultivation, maintenance, and promotion of plants and turf around the Museum Park while exercising caution around sculptures.
- Responsibility for water feature maintenance; irrigation installation/repair; pesticide application; watering; pruning; fertilizing; and identifying diseased plants and using Integrated Pest Management.
- Performing proper trail installation and trail maintenance.
- Responsibility for maintenance of small engines and equipment such as minor repairs as well as oil and filter changes.
- Operating light and heavy equipment such as bobcats, forklifts, mini excavators, dump trucks, and tractors.
- Working safely in a public park around children, bikers, and large groups.
Position/Physical Requirements
- Typical work schedule is Monday to Thursday-10-hour shifts.
- Employee is considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days, during emergencies, and may be called to work special events.
- Must be able to frequently lift up to 30 lbs. of force with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Performing snow and ice removal as needed.
- Work requires a variety of physical tasks, visual acuity, and outside under all weather conditions.
- Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must have a NC Pesticide License or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Qualified Candidates Must Have Or Be Able To
- Demonstrated experience or knowledge in plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and grounds maintenance with the ability to safely apply that knowledge in the field including pruning, weeding, planting, mowing, and mulching.
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience in turf management including identifying common weeds and diseases, mowing, and procedures necessary to maintain high quality turfgrass.
- Demonstrated experience or knowledge in the cultivation and maintenance of plants material.
Management Preferences
- Experience in trail construction and maintenance as well as stormwater management around infrastructure such as trails and sculpture.
- Experience in the operation of heavy equipment such as skid steer, forklifts, mini excavators, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, golf carts, and RTV vehicles.
- Experience working in a formal garden or public park.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
AND
two years of progressive experience in horticultural work;

Associate's degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening
OR
closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution;
OR
An Equivalent Combination Of Education And Experience.

The North Carolina Museum of Art, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, is the State’s premier visual arts institution. Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
