Healing Strides is seeking a part-time, on-site Horseback Riding Instructor in Boones Mill, VA. You will plan and teach riding lessons for riders of various ages and abilities, prepare horses and equipment, and ensure safety procedures are followed.

You will assist with horse care, stabilize routines, and support scheduling, records, and special events. PATH Intl. certification is preferred but not required.

Role Description

The Horseback Riding Instructor is a part-time, on-site role based in Boones Mill, VA. This position is responsible for planning and teaching safe, appropriate riding lessons for riders of varying ages, abilities, and experience levels, in alignment with Healing Strides’ mission and program standards. Day-to-day tasks include preparing horses and equipment for lessons, instructing riders in proper riding techniques, ensuring safety procedures are followed, and maintaining a supportive learning environment. The instructor will assist with horse care and stable routines as needed, monitor horse behavior and suitability for lessons, and communicate progress and concerns to program staff and caregivers. Additional responsibilities may include helping with lesson scheduling, maintaining accurate records, and supporting special events or clinics.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess strong Riding Instruction and Equestrian skills, including teaching foundational and advanced techniques to diverse riders.
  • Candidates should possess basic Horse Care and Horse Training skills, with experience in safe handling, grooming, tack use, and evaluating horse readiness for lessons.
  • Candidates should possess basic Stable Management skills, including organizing equipment, maintaining a clean and safe barn environment, and supporting daily stable routines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, risk management, and adherence to program policies in an equine environment.
  • Ability to work respectfully with individuals who have a range of physical, cognitive, emotional, or social challenges.
  • Clear, patient communication and instructional skills, with the ability to adapt teaching methods to different learning styles.
  • Physical ability to perform barn and arena tasks, including leading horses, mounting support, and working outdoors in varied conditions.
  • Prior experience in therapeutic or adaptive riding programs, and relevant certifications (e.g., PATH Intl. or similar) are preferred but not required.
