Job summary

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Home Assessments Team Member to promote wildfire readiness by engaging residents and communities in home and community assessments. The role functions within the Wildland Fire Management Program and reports to the Home Assessment Module Lead.

The position emphasizes independent work with minimal supervision, field assessments, and collaboration with outreach teams to advance wildfire resilience and access to related programs.

Qualifications

• NFPA Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Certification required within 2-year of hire.
• Experience: Minimum one year in related field.
• GED or High School Diploma required.

Responsibilities

• Engages and educates residents and communities on wildfire mitigation and preparedness strategies to improve wildfire resilience in the built environment.
• Plans, prepares, and coordinates individual home and community wildfire assessments.
• Conveys accurate wildfire risk and mitigation guidance across Jefferson County.
• Engages and motivates communities to participate in parcel-level wildfire risk assessments.
• Utilizes assessment technology and materials to deliver a parcel-level risk assessment report.
• Identifies and prioritizes home hardening and vegetation management options to prevent ignition.
• Provides guidance on home hardening, defensible space, and fire-resistant landscaping.
• Guides residents to funding sources for wildfire resilience programs.
• Educates on Firewise USA®, Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) and FACO Neighborhood Ambassador programs.
• Assists in developing and delivering educational materials to homeowner and community groups.
• Position involves outdoor work year-round, including walking on steep terrain.

The Home Assessment Team Member serves as the primary engagement asset to increase awareness and motivate residents to action to better plan, prepare and mitigate for wildfire. The primary role of Home Assessors is to engage with residents and communities to complete individual home and community level wildfire assessments. Home Assessors serve as a technical resource for residents, community organizations, other departments, and partner wildfire professionals. Home Assessors offer guidance for prioritizing mitigation strategies to reduce potential home ignition and increase wildfire resilience.

The Home Assessment Team Member is a supporting position and a member of the Community Engagement team of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Wildland Fire Management Program. The position reports directly to the Home Assessment Module Lead. The position will be responsible for conducting home assessments and creating a report that prioritizes mitigations action residents can take to reduce the risk of wildfire on their property and to their homes. The program utilizes a technology platform directly tied to a financial incentive program supporting wildfire resilience actions. The home assessment program complements efforts of the outreach and education team, engaging residents in all aspects of wildfire readiness. This position plays a role in ensuring that the residents of Jefferson County have the information, resources, and access to programs to be prepared for wildfire events.

The Wildland Fire Management Program was recently approved by the County Commissioners for a significant investment, including the addition of 37 new permanent full-time positions. The program includes a response and suppression section, Community Engagement, a grant coordinator, two Fire Management Officers, a Fire Planner, and GIS Analyst.

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated person who can work independently with little oversight or direction to achieve program goals and interacts well with a team. This is an in-person (not remote) position that will work a 4-10 schedule (Monday -Thursday) but is also expected to be available outside the normal work week for incident support or special outreach programs as needed. During major incidents, this position may be eligible for overtime outside the normal work week as well as opportunities to participate on the county's Type 3 Incident Management Team for all-hazard incidents within and outside the county and/or state.

• Engages and motivates communities to encourage resident participation in parcel level wildfire risk assessments.
• Utilizes assessment technology and supporting preparedness materials to deliver a comprehensive parcel level risk assessment report.
• Identifies, conveys, and prioritizes methods and options for home hardening and vegetation management strategies to prevent and reduce structural ignition.
• Provides technical guidance and options for home hardening, creating defensible space, and fire-resistant landscaping techniques.
• Guides residents and communities towards related funding sources as appropriate.
• Educates residents and communities on national, regional, and local level community centered programs such as Firewise USA®, Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) and FACO Neighborhood Ambassador.
• Assists with the development, preparation, and delivery of educational materials and presentations to homeowner and community groups.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Position involves working outside year-round, walking over potentially steep terrain.
