Job summary

The City of Chicago is seeking Hoisting Engineers for multiple departments in seasonal roles. The positions involve operating heavy construction and off-road equipment to excavate, lift, and load earth, water, sewer pipes, and other heavy materials at various work sites. Multiple rate classes apply based on equipment operated and level attained.

Starting pay is $68.80 per hour. CDL Class A/B and Crane Operator licenses are required for mobile crane work; apprenticeship or journeyman

  • Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Operating Engineer apprenticeship training program and journeyman status.
  • Three (3) years of journey-level work experience as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer, or completion of an industry/company-sponsored apprenticeship plus one year of journey-level experience.

  • Operate heavy construction and off-road equipment to excavate, lift, move and load earth and pipes.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment for safe operation; perform routine oil changes and lubrication.
  • Operate a mobile crane as required and prepare work activity reports.

Starting Annual Salary: $68.80/ Hourly

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with INTERNATIONAL UNION OF OPERATING ENGINEERS, LOCAL 150 - BARGAINING UNIT 42. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, performs journey-level Hoisting Engineer work, operating heavy construction and off-road equipment used to excavate, lift, move and load earth, water and sewer pipes, and other heavy materials and equipment; and perform related duties as required Class is a multi-rate title; rate of pay to individual positions is dependent on the Class (I, II and III or Mobile Crane) or type equipment operated

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Drives and operates heavy construction and off-road equipment including front-end loaders, backhoes, compactors, pavers, graders and excavators at a work site to dig trenches, backfill, street and ground openings, asphalt street paving and tamping, and loading, lifting and setting pipe
  • Operates air compressors, pumps and other power equipment at construction sites
  • Controls and maneuvers heavy construction equipment by using switches, moving levers and foot pedals and applying knowledge of equipment operations
  • Inspects equipment for operating condition, checking fluid levels, cables and hoses for wear and replacing worn parts to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Changes oil and lubricates moving parts at regularly scheduled intervals to ensure efficient performance of equipment
  • Operates a mobile crane, requiring a Crane Operator's license, to lift materials and other heavy objects at a work site
  • Prepares work activity reports

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE AND SEASONAL
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience

Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Operating Engineer apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, OR

Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available:

  • Three (3) years of journey-level work experience as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer
  • Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer, plus one (1) year of journey-level work experience as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
  • A commercial driver's license (CDL), Class A or B, as issued by the State of Illinois
  • Positions operating a mobile crane must possess a Crane Operator's license as issued by the City of Chicago
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions
  • Exposure to loud noise, fumes or dust, oily or wet environment
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., heavy machinery, construction sites)
EQUIPMENT
  • Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, earplugs, gloves, vest, pads)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Some lifting (up to 100 pounds) is required
  • Physical ability to operate various heavy equipment and machinery
  • Physical ability to access cabs of heavy construction equipment
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires candidates to pass a skills assessment. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Bidders who receive a passing score on the test will be hired in seniority order. External applicants who receive a passing score will be hired in lottery/random order.

Test 1: High Lift Fluid Inspection and Operation
  • You will be required to access and identify the location of key operating fluid
  • You will be required to safely operate the High Lift to scoop and load material into a dump truck
Test 2: Combination Back Hoe Fluid Inspection and Operation
  • You will be required to access and identify the location of key operating fluids
  • You will be required to safely operate the Back Hoe part of the Combination Back Hoe to excavate material from the ground
  • You will be required to safely operate the Loader part of the Combination Back Hoe to backfill, compact, and grade the excavated area
