Job summary

The City of Durango is seeking a Hockey Referee to officiate games at Chapman Hill Ice Rink, applying USA Hockey rules and working with players, coaches, and other officials to promote fair and respectful play.

Successful candidates will maintain current USA Hockey officiating certification or obtain it prior to officiating, demonstrate thorough knowledge of the rules, and contribute to a safe, organized game environment for the community.

  • USA Hockey officiating certification or ability to obtain before officiating for the City of Durango.

Responsibilities

  • Officiate hockey games and apply USA Hockey rules fairly and consistently.
  • Reinforce game rules and sportsmanship for a safe, respectful environment.
  • Check rink, equipment, uniforms, and protective gear for safety before play.
  • Discuss ground rules with coaches or captains before games.
  • Stay current on hockey rules and attend preseason training.
  • Work independently or with other referees to keep games moving.
  • Assist with rink setup and takedown and handle game cancellations when needed.
  • Inform the Recreation Supervisor about rink, equipment, safety, or conduct concerns.
  • Arrive at scheduled time, stay through assigned duration, and return City-issued equipment.
  • Represent the City professionally with players, coaches, families, spectators, and coworkers.

Job description

Step onto the ice as a Hockey Referee with the City of Durango. You’ll officiate hockey games at Chapman Hill Ice Rink, apply USA Hockey rules, and work with players, coaches, and other officials to support fair and respectful play.

What You’ll Do in This Role
  • Officiate hockey games and apply the rules fairly and consistently.

  • Work independently or with other referees to keep games moving and respond to situations on the ice.
  • Help with rink setup and takedown and game cancellations when needed.
  • Let the Recreation Supervisor know about rink, equipment, safety, or conduct concerns.
  • Arrive at your scheduled time, stay through the end of your assigned work, and return any City-issued equipment.
  • Represent the City professionally and treat players, coaches, families, spectators, and coworkers with respect.
You Have
  • Thorough knowledge of hockey and its rules.
  • Current USA Hockey officiating certification or the ability to obtain certification before officiating games for the City of Durango.
You Will Succeed in This Role If You
  • Make fair calls and apply the rules consistently.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with players, coaches, coworkers, and community members.
  • Keep up with game play and stay aware of what is happening on the ice.
  • Work well independently and with other referees and recreation staff.
  • Stay calm and professional when disagreements or concerns come up.
