Job summary

UPMC East is currently hiring a fulltime Histotechnologist to join our team in Monroeville, PA. The role involves processing and preparing tissue samples in a clinical laboratory and supports quality control.

The daylight shift is Monday through Friday, with start times around 5:00–5:30 am and duties include embedding, sectioning, staining, and ensuring accurate patient identification. A career ladder is available for technical and managerial growth.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates progression of skills toward independent work in histology workflow.
• Maintains instruments and performs daily quality control checks.
• Prepare slides and tissue sections with accurate patient identification.
• Process surgical and autopsy specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.
• Ensure tissues are embedded and sectioned per department protocols.

UPMC East is hiring a fulltime Histotechnologist to mainly work a daylight shift, Monday thru Friday – either 5 am to 1:30 pm or 5:30 am to 2 pm.

Purpose:

Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.

Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
• Supports academic mission of department.
• Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
• Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
• Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
• Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
• Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
• Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
• Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
