Job summary

Joulé is seeking a Histotechnician to join its diagnostic histology lab in Pittsburgh, PA. The role supports complex diagnostic and research needs across the system and offers flexible shifts (Daylight, Afternoon, Night) with competitive hourly pay and shift differentials.

The ideal candidate has an NAACLS-accredited HT program (or related associate degree with biology/chemistry), plus histology experience and ASCP certification within 18 months of hire.

Qualifications

• NAACLS accredited HT program completed within the last 5 years or an Associate degree with 12 biology and chemistry credits.
• 1 year of clinical histology experience post-training with certification or 3 years without certification.
• ASCP certification required within 18 months of hire.
• Sr. Histotechnician requires 2 years post-training HT (ASCP) certification or 3 years without certification.

Responsibilities

• Understands CoPath related to histology workflow.
• Progress toward independent work in advanced staining area with QC checks.
• Process and prepare surgical/autopsy tissues for embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping.
• Embed/cut specialized tissue including minute biopsies.
• Ensure tissues are properly embedded/cut with correct orientation and no artifacts.
• Accurately prepare slides for microtomy with correct patient identification.
• Maintain instruments per QC specs and daily maintenance.
• Assist with filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

• Afternoon: Monday–Friday, 1:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
• Night: Monday–Friday, 10:00 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.

Hourly rate: Competitive hourly rate and shift differential offer to off shifts

Overview

Responsibilities

• Understands CoPath related to Histology workflow.
• Progresses towards working independently in an advanced staining area. Performs QC checks at each phase of processing/staining
• Processes and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.
• Embeds and cuts specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
• Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters.
• Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
• Maintains instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
• Performs additional tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

Requirements

• Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR an Associate's degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
• 1 year of clinical histology laboratory experience post-training with certification OR 3 years of experience working as Histology Lab Technician or equivalent title without certification.
• ASCP certification is required within 18 months of hire.

Additional Requirements for Sr. Histotechnician

• 2 years of clinical histology laboratory experience post-training with Histotechnician- HT (ASCP) certification is required or 3 years of experience without certification.
