Summary
This position performs a variety of specialized medical tissue testing and administrative tasks in support of clinical activities. Work involves preparation of tissue samples to enable pathologists to determine the cause of death, degree of disease, and guide treatment.
Responsibilities
- Investigate problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
- Participate in teams or perform special projects/assignments.
- Perform quality control and equipment maintenance.
- Perform routine and specialized test procedures, including preparing tissue slides by processing, embedding, sectioning, examining, and staining tissues received from surgical pathology, autopsy, hematology, cytology, and research areas.
- Teach Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents, and train new employees. Serve as a technical resource.
- Prepare specimens and reagents, solutions, heat, or filters as required.
- Provide leadership and guidance to co-workers.
- Report results to healthcare providers and consult with healthcare providers regarding test results.
- Review test results to ensure accuracy of reports and timely correction of errors.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Biological Science.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
- HTL(ASCP) certified by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) within two years from date of hire.
Experience Requirements
- If Bachelor’s degree plus completion of a NAACLS accredited histology program, no years of experience required.
- If Bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical science, one (1) year of relevant laboratory experience required.
