Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Histology/Cytology Manager or General Lab Management, Wellstar Health System Laboratory, and direct supervision of the Histotechnology Supervisor or Lab Manager, the Histologic Technologist is responsible for the complete preparation of all routine surgicals, autopsy tissues including frozen sections, sendout procedures, processing, cutting, staining, and coverslipping. Also performs cytology preparation, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry (antibody optimizing and validation), and has general knowledge of techniques, principles, instrumentation, and troubleshooting abilities. Confirms and distributes completed surgical cases and reports, manages clerical duties involving filing, retrieving tumor and consult requests, and maintains full knowledge of regulatory policies.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  1. Surgical and Autopsy Tissue Embedding and Cutting: Embed all processed surgical tissue with quality and accuracy. Verify specimen identification matches grossing reports. Cut and stain routine H&E slides, label with correct patient identifiers, attach reports, verify slide and dictation match, and deliver to the pathologist.
  2. Special Procedures: Perform recuts, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry stains accurately. Troubleshoot automated instruments, perform titration, optimization, and validation of new antibodies and lot numbers. Verify stains work as expected. Distribute completed test orders to requesting pathologists. Work independently with sound judgment.
  3. Pathology Computer, Principles, and Instrumentation: Troubleshoot instrumentation, manage request logs in the pathology computer system, enter charges, and understand billing processes including frozen sections, immunohistochemistry, etc.
  4. Quality Management: Document and resolve quality control issues, perform equipment maintenance, and manage reports and requisitions accurately. Understand cost management involving reagents and efficiency without compromising quality. Follow all policies and standards.

Minimum Education and Certification

  • Associate's Degree (or HT certification obtained prior to 2017)
  • All certifications required upon hire, including Histotechnician certification within 1.5 years

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 1 year preferred experience in histology
  • Skills in histology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, safety, regulatory knowledge, and computer skills
  • Ability to work independently with integrity
