Job summary

UPMC Chautauqua is seeking a dedicated Histotechnologist to join our Histology Lab team in Jamestown, NY. This full-time, dayshift role offers a supportive environment with no weekends or holidays.

Title and salary will be determined by education and experience, with sign-on bonuses of $15,000 (0-1 year) or $20,000 (1+ year), plus $10,000 after three years. NY license required; ASCP HTL certification within 12 months.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a biology/chemistry related field or equivalent, with a minimum of 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry.
  • Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: ASCP HTL certification required within 12 months of hire; NY license required for NY locations.
  • Clinical Laboratory Technologist OR Histotechnologist.
  • NYS Staff Exclusion List (NYSEL).

Responsibilities

  • Advance toward independent work in advanced staining area.
  • Process and prepare tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and cover slipping.
  • Ensure tissues are embedded and cut according to department protocols with proper orientation.
  • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/staining.
  • Maintain instruments according to QC specs and daily maintenance protocols.

Job description

UPMC Chautauqua is hiring a dedicated Histotechnologist to join our dynamic Histology Lab team.

This position is full-time, dayshift hours. No weekends or holidays.

Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

We're excited to offer sign-on bonuses for qualified Histo Techs who join our team:

  • $15,000 for those with 0-1 year of experience with a 2-year full-time commitment

  • $20,000 for those with 1+ years of experience with a 2-year full-time commitment

Plus, earn an additional $10,000 upon completion of your third year of employment.

Sign-on bonuses are also available for part-time positions and will be prorated based on commitment.

Purpose: Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

  • Supports academic mission of department.

  • Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.

  • Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

  • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

  • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and cover slipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

  • Successful completion of bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

  • One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post training if not a graduate of accredited training program required.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnologist- HTL (ASCP) certification required within 12 months of hire. New York License required for NY locations.

  • Clinical Laboratory Technologist OR Histotechnologist

  • NYS Staff Exclusion List (NYSEL)
