Job summary

Northeast Dermatology Associates is seeking a Histotechnician - I in Portsmouth, VA to prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination by performing grossing, embedding, sectioning, and staining, with meticulous attention to quality and accuracy to ensure diagnostic reliability.

You will follow laboratory protocols, participate in quality control, operate histology equipment, assist with inventory, and maintain patient confidentiality in line with HIPAA and biosafety standards.

Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in chemical or biological science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
• Alternatively, completion of 60 semester hours (or equivalent), including 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours in science with chemistry/biology.
• Minimum of one year of experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory preferred.

Responsibilities

• Process tissue specimens using histology techniques including grossing, embedding, microtomy, and staining (H&E, special stains, immunohistochemistry) according to established laboratory protocols.
• Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and documentation throughout all stages of preparation.
• Follow laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures to maintain accuracy and regulatory compliance.
• Operate, clean, and maintain histology instruments and equipment, ensuring proper working condition.
• Identify and assist in resolving technical or workflow challenges to support an efficient laboratory environment.
• Handle and dispose of chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with biosafety, OSHA, CLIA and state standards.
• Assist with inventory, slide organization, documentation and general workflow support.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory data in line with HIPAA.
