Job summary

Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center, part-time Histology vacancy within the Histology Team at Trinity Health of New England, invites qualified candidates to join a dynamic laboratory environment in Hartford. Per diem, non-benefit eligible, with responsibilities from slide preparation to tissue processing and quality control.

The role requires NAACLS-accredited histotechnician training or equivalent coursework, with ASCP eligibility/ certification within 1 year, and 1 year of histopathology

Qualifications

• Completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program or a combination of biology and chemistry coursework as specified.
• One year of full-time histopathology laboratory experience preferred.
• HT ASCP certification or eligibility within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in preparing slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologists.
• Ensures proper accessioning and labeling of tissue samples and processes related paperwork.
• Prepares tissue slides with H&E staining and coverslipping; assists with IHC material as needed.
• Embeds tissue in paraffin, performs microtomy, and maintains equipment with basic troubleshooting.
• Maintains quality control and adheres to CLIA, CAP, safety, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:

• Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures.
• Ensures proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples and processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
• Ensures proper tissue processing.
• Embed processed tissue in paraffin; performs microtomy of embedded tissue.
• Prepares slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and performs cover slipping of stained slides either manually or automated. May obtain and prepare control material used in IHC procedures for validation.
• Performs filing of finished blocks and slides.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures. Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
• Adheres to laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities. Ensures all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.

Per Diem - not benefit eligible

Minimum Requirements :

Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program OR At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry(must include credit hours in both), AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory* within the last ten years.

One (1) year of experience as a Histotechnician preferred. Must have experience in the following areas: Fixation, Microtomy, and Processing.

HT ASCP required or be eligible to take and successfully pass the exam within one (1) year of employment.

Pay Range:

$27.35 - $43.75

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
