Job summary

Prime Healthcare is seeking a Histotechnician for Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston to prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination and support pathology workflows. Responsibilities include fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and IHC procedures, with emphasis on accuracy and safety.

The role requires an associate’s degree in a biological or clinical laboratory field and prefers HT/ASCP certification and hospital lab experience.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in biological/chemical/clinical lab science or histology program completed.
• HT/ASCP certification preferred.
• Minimum of one year hospital lab experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination by fixation, processing, embedding, and microtomy.
• Perform routine and special histology staining procedures per protocol.
• Assist with immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and related procedures.
• Ensure proper specimen labeling and tracking throughout processing.
• Maintain quality and integrity of tissue samples for accurate diagnosis.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology equipment (microtomes, processors, stainers).
• Adhere to lab safety and infection control policies and regulatory standards.
• Document, log, and track records to comply with CAP, CLIA, TJC requirements.
• Support workflow to meet turnaround times and prioritize urgent specimens.
• Assist with inventory management and supply stocking.
• Handle and dispose of hazardous materials per safety regulations.
• Collaborate with pathologists and lab staff to support patient care.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Participate in continuing education and competency assessments.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Lab Director or Manager.
