Job summary

Prime Healthcare St Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL is seeking a Histotechnician to prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination. You will perform fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining, ensuring quality and timely results.

Responsibilities include IHC, equipment maintenance, QA, and adherence to CAP/CLIA standards. The role requires an Associate’s degree in lab science with histotechnology training, HT/ASCP preferred, and hospital lab experience.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in biological, chemical, or clinical lab science with histotechnology training.
• HT/ASCP certification, or equivalent, preferred.
• Minimum hospital lab experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination including fixation, processing, embedding, and microtomy.
• Perform routine and special staining procedures per protocol.
• Assist with immunohistochemistry staining and related procedures.
• Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and tracking throughout processing.
• Maintain quality and integrity of tissue samples for accurate diagnosis.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology equipment (microtomes, processors, stainers).
• Adhere to safety guidelines and infection control policies.
• Maintain documentation per CAP/CLIA/TJC standards.
• Perform quality control and participate in QA activities.
• Manage workflow to meet turnaround times and prioritize urgent cases.
• Assist with inventory management and supply stocking.
• Ensure safe handling/disposal of hazardous materials.
• Collaborate with pathologists and lab staff to support patient care.
• Maintain a clean, organized, safe workspace and participate in education.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Lab Director or Manager.
