Job summary

Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid, Oklahoma is seeking a historical interpreter to share the history and culture of northwestern Oklahoma with the public. This role involves conducting tours, developing educational programs, and assisting in visitor services while engaging with visitors of all ages.

Job Description

The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid, Oklahoma is seeking a historical interpreter to help share the history and culture of northwestern Oklahoma to the public. Whether the audience is an elementary field trip or the general public, a successful candidate will be an effective communicator and storyteller in a variety of settings. This position assists the director of education in the development of educational programs on northwest Oklahoma history and the presentation of these programs to the public. This includes conducting tours at the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center, providing information about the history of northwestern Oklahoma, and performing other related tasks such as recruiting and supervising volunteers and staff, greeting visitors, and assisting in operating the visitor services desk when needed. Other duties include assisting with social media management, outreach programming, and collaborating with community businesses and other regional museums.

Basic Functions
  • Assist the education director with planning and executing programs and events and communicating with sponsors.
  • Conducts tours of museum and living history village for visitors; schedules programs and group tours.
  • Conducts historical research to develop programs.
  • Develops and updates curriculum to comply with Oklahoma Academic Standards.
  • Portrays historical characters including developing appropriate historical clothing and dialogue; coordinates the presentation of special events portraying people and events of the past.
  • Recruits, trains, schedules and supervises staff and volunteers; responds to requests for information.
  • Greets the public and assists in the museum store operation; assists in the selection of appropriate educational merchandise for the museum store.
  • Assist in the management of the various social media accounts, creating interesting and engaging history-based content.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move 25 pounds
  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position include knowledge of the preparation of informational material; of Oklahoma history; of principles of living history; of appropriate historical clothing styles. Ability is required to train; to establish and maintain working relationships with others; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and to perform historical research. Some training is available.

Education

Minimum education and experience requirements for this position consist of a bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, anthropology, archaeology, elementary education or a closely related field and one year of experience as an interpreter/educator or curator in a museum or historic site or teaching in the fields of history, anthropology, archaeology or elementary education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary

The salary for this position is $45,000 with full benefits. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center is a part of the Oklahoma Historical Society and operates through a partnership with the Cherokees Strip Regional Heritage Center, Inc.
