This position is located at:

Primary Purpose of Position:

The Historical Interpreter I will be responsible for conducting interpretive programs, demonstrations, special events,

conduct tours, and programs as part of visitor services. Give general on-site and off-site presentations, provide living

history demonstrations, conduct appropriate artifact management and care techniques, research topics, perform

clerical and financial duties, operate gift shop, greet visitors, and help with site maintenance. This position is also

responsible for some of the site’s social media content and outreach.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Visitor Service and Site Interpretation: Greet and orient visitors, conduct guided tours and living history demonstrations, operate gift shop, and answer phone/email inquiries.

  • Special Event Planning: Assist with special event preparations and set-up, provide support during special events, and assist with clean-up.

  • Administrative Functions: Complete monthly deposits with 100% accuracy, file and distribute incoming mail, maintain site mailing lists, conduct inventories of site collections and office supplies, schedule group tours and programs.

  • Site Maintenance: Attend to weekly maintenance of assigned interpretive structures and maintain cleanliness of office space and Visitor Center.

  • Responsible for Social Media Administration and event publicity.

  • Give general on-site and off-site presentations, provide living history demonstrations, conduct appropriate artifact management and care techniques.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work the following schedule for this position: Tuesday – Saturday, 8:30 – 5:00, with some travel, nights, and weekends work required, particularly during special events, etc.

  • Must have the ability to give guided tours and/or special demonstrations, which include long periods of walking, standing, climbing stairs, and talking for extended periods of time up to 3 hours (which may be repetitive), with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Must have the ability to lift 20 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Must have the ability to work outside in various weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to apply site and state office practices.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated experience giving guided tours and adapting tours to age, interest level, special interests, or time constraints.

Management Prefers:

  • Experience with living history demonstrations.

  • Experience of archival practices and/or artifact management.

  • Experience with social media administration for site updates and events.

Section/Unit Description:

Somerset Place offers a comprehensive and realistic view of 19th-century life on a large North Carolina plantation. Originally, this unusual plantation included more than 100,000 densely wooded, mainly swampy acres bordering the five-by-eight mile Lake Phelps, in present-day Washington County. During its 80 years as an active plantation (1785-1865), hundreds of acres were converted into high yielding fields of rice, corn, oats, wheat, beans, peas, and flax; sophisticated sawmills turned out thousands of feet of lumber. By 1865, Somerset Place was one of the upper South's largest plantations.
