Responsibilities

• Oversees cultural resource management projects and planning in cooperation with field staff and Resource Management Chief, including restoration, preservation, and stabilization of cultural resources in the State Park Service.
• Manages collections, catalogs and conserves cultural objects owned by the Park Service, including institutional collections and archives.
• Conducts training in area of expertise; works with field staff to promote teamwork within the park and across the agency; represents the office on agency teams.
• Oversees research and coordinates with Education Section and field staff of interpretive programs, exhibits, and educational publications in history and cultural resources.
• Advises the agency and recommends policies, procedures and strategies in history, interpretation and cultural resources; develops management plans for cultural resources.
• Promotes teamwork within the unit and agency; represents the office on agency teams throughout the year.

Education

Job description

The SC State Park Service manages and protects more than 90,000 acres of South Carolina's natural and cultural resources, which range from deep mountain wilderness and old-growth forests to plantation homes, battlefields, waterfronts, and wetlands. The state park system includes 49 operational parks and six historic properties. The system also includes more than 1,500 separate buildings, 155 cabins, 80 motel rooms, 3,000 campsites, two 18-hole golf courses, two saltwater fishing piers, 42 ponds, 156 miles of paved roads, and more than 300 miles of hiking and riding trails.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Under limited supervision, provide technical and professional services in the areas of cultural resource management and historical interpretation for the State Park Service. Serves as primary liaison in these areas with assigned parks.

• 1) Oversees cultural resource management projects and planning in cooperation with field staff and Resource Management Chief, including restoration, preservation, and stabilization of cultural resources in the State Park Service.
• 2) Manages collections, catalogues and conserves cultural objects owned by the Park Service, including institutional collections and archives.
• 3) Conducts training in area of expertise. Work with field staff in a manner that promotes teamwork within the specific park and across the agency. Practice and promote teamwork within the State Park Service, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.
• 4) Oversees research, and coordinates with the Education Section and field staff of interpretive programs, exhibits, and educational publications in the area of history and cultural resources.
• 5) Advises the agency and recommends policies, procedures and strategies in the area of history, interpretation and cultural resources, including specific and general management plans for cultural resources.
• 6) Practice and promote teamwork within the work unit/office, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.

Bachelor's degree in history, cultural resource management or related field and 3 years' experience in a position involving historic site management and interpretation; or Master's degree and one year of experience in a position involving historic site management and interpretation.

Additional Requirements:

• 1) Position requires moderate driving and travel, with occasional overnight stays. Position requires medium lifting, walking and standing on uneven terrain. Working conditions are sometimes outdoors, continuing during hot, cold and inclement weather, and exposing employee to dusty conditions.
• 2) Ability to carry out research, write clearly, perform oral presentations and public relations activity. Ability to carry out muliptle tasks in cooperation with others as a subordinate or project leadeer.
• 3)State Issued driver's license.
• 4) Become a South Carolina "Qualified Preservation Professional" in accordance with 60-12-10(1) of the SC Code of Laws (SC State Owned or Leased Historic Properties Act) within one year of hire.

Full-time, 37.5 hours weekly.
