Job summary

Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) seeks an Historian to gather historical data from diverse sources, assess evidence, and interpret information for authenticity and significance. This role supports DPAA Lab Services and the mission to account for missing personnel.

Responsibilities include complex historical research, archival work, and reporting to leadership. Travel for Field Investigations may be required, with a background check upon hire.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in history or related field; Doctoral degree preferred.
• 6–8 years of professional historical research experience.
• Experience with archival research and primary/secondary sources.
• Strong written and oral communication skills with publications or presentations.

Responsibilities

• Performs complex historical research into casualty resolution and unidentified remains in US cemeteries.
• Conducts documentary research, oral histories, and case narratives for agency leadership.
• Builds recommendations to disinter unidentified remains from past conflicts and pursue exhumation/identification.
• Communicates with foreign representatives/embassies and casualty/mortuary offices.
• Occasionally travels nationally and internationally for field investigations as required.
