Job Description:

The Grossing Tech assists the anatomic pathologist in performing gross dissection of surgical specimens and biopsies. They perform activities related to accessioning, grossing, and routine processing of tissues received from surgical procedures. Tasks may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of tissue samples.
  • Process paperwork related to accessioning and reporting.
  • Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining.
  • Perform gross evaluation of biopsy and surgical specimens, followed by appropriate dissection and description of findings.
  • Collaborate with Pathologists and Departmental Supervisor to develop and maintain grossing procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
  • Properly dispose of bio-hazardous and chemically hazardous materials; prepare solutions and reagents according to standard procedures.
  • Follow personnel policies, including schedules, attendance, safety training, and continuing education for competency and certification maintenance.
  • Participate in regulatory inspections and ensure readiness.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, management, medical directors, and other divisions.
  • Follow internal controls and reporting structures.

Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or completion of an accredited Histotechnology program plus one year of experience OR Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology, or Chemistry
  • National Certification as HT / HLT (ASCP)
  • Thorough knowledge of histology methods and disease correlation
  • Ability to follow protocols for fixation and staining of samples
  • Consistent specimen sectioning with proper orientation, thickness, and staining quality
  • Good technique in cutting, embedding, and staining specimens
  • Knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
  • Ability to train others
  • Proactive problem-solving and decision-making skills
