Job summary

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary within Mass General Brigham seeks a staff Histotechnician/Histotechnologist to prepare tissue specimens by processing, microtomy, and mounting on slides for microscopic examination.

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and 0–1 year of histology experience; ASCP HT/HTL preferred. This onsite role at 243-245 Charles Street offers a daytime shift and a 40-hour work week.

Responsibilities

  • Processes, embeds, and sections tissue for slides.
  • Embeds control tissue and cuts control slides to maintain a control library.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and quality control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes, cleaning processors, and changing staining solutions.
  • Ensures appropriate use of PPE to maintain employee safety at all times.
  • Maintains case identification and ensures tracking to ensure patient safety.
  • Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, prepared work area.

Job Summary

Summary: Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by processing, performing microtomy, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis. Does this position require Patient Care? No

Essential Functions
  • Processes, embeds, and sections tissue for slides.
  • Embeds control tissue and cuts control slides to maintain an adequate control library.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and quality control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes, cleaning processors, and changing staining solutions.
  • Ensures appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to maintain employee safety at all times.
  • Maintains case identification and ensures appropriate tracking throughout the entire process to ensure patient safety.
  • Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required
  • Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No
Licenses and Credentials
  • Histotechnician [HT(ASCP)] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) preferred
  • Histotechnologist [HTL(ASCP)] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) preferred
Experience

Clinical or histology experience 0-1 year required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, and routine staining.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
