Job summary

Parkland Health is seeking a Histotechnician to receive, process, and prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination. You will ensure specimen integrity, accurate labeling, and proper documentation for pathology workflows.

The role requires NAACLS Histotechnician training or equivalent, with optional related degrees; experience and ongoing certification alignment are valued to support quality patient care.

Qualifications

  • Completed training in an approved NAACLS Histotechnician program or equivalent.
  • An Associate's degree may be substituted for HT credentials.
  • 60 credit hours with biology and chemistry from an accredited college may satisfy education requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Receive specimens and assess integrity, verify labeling and orders.
  • Prepare routine gross tissue specimens for microscopic examination (processing, embedding, sectioning, staining).
  • Prepare solutions and stains to meet procedural specifications.
  • Maintain laboratory records and logs per standards.
  • Serve as a resource to hospital personnel and physicians; collaborate with team.
  • Stay current with histology advances and maintain relevant certifications.

Job description

Location: New Parkland Hospital

Primary Purpose

Responsible for the receipt and preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination including surgical, autopsy, research and outside cases, documenting results, and maintaining work area and equipment to ensure compliance with PHHS guidelines.

Minimum Specifications
Education
  • Must have successfully completed training in an approved NAACLS Histotechnician program
  • OR An Associate's degree
  • OR at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry
Experience
  • One year experience in histopathology preferred.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Histotechnician - HT (ASCP) preferred.
Skills Or Special Abilities
  • Must be able to demonstrate a routine knowledge of basic histologic equipment in order to appropriately operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of related equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing with all levels of internal and external personnel.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of histologic procedures and techniques.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for receiving specimens, assessing specimen integrity, verifying labeling and documentation, and verification of orders to ensure that patients are appropriately billed.
  • Responsible for the preparation of routine gross tissue specimens for microscopic examination by pathologist, including surgical, autopsy, research and outside cases. Preparation includes processing, embedding, cutting, staining and cover slipping to ensure results meet accreditation requirements.
  • Prepares solutions and stains ensuring preparation meets procedural specifications.
  • Maintains laboratory records and logs to reflect procedures performed ensuring documentation meets laboratory standards.
  • Serves as a resource to PHHS personnel, other hospital and physicians maintaining positive working relationship with management and employees to ensure cooperation and cultivation of a positive team environment.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer (internal as well as external) satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals and mission of the PHHS.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the field of Anatomic Pathology by attending seminars, workshops or in-service training, reading professional journals, and maintaining certification as a Histology Technician, integrating this knowledge as appropriate into the job.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, maintains cleanliness of equipment and troubleshoots equipment malfunctions ensuring activities meet PHHS guidelines.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Histology area. Follows internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding, and reports any unethical or fraudulent behavior.
