Job summary

Endeavor Health is seeking a Histology Technician for per diem shifts at Swedish Hospital in Chicago. The role involves processing tissue specimens, embedding, sectioning and staining, with emphasis on quality control and accurate slide preparation.

You will operate microscopes and tissue processors, examine slides for abnormalities, and perform H&E, IHC, and special stains to support diagnoses. Requires Bachelor’s degree; ASCP HT/HTL certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Experience: 1 year in a histology laboratory.
  • Certification: HT or HTL ASCP BOC certification recommended.
  • Working knowledge with Benchmark Ultra, Special Stainer, and Sakura systems.

Responsibilities

  • Process tissue specimens from receipt to embedding, sectioning, staining and mounting.
  • Uphold quality control to ensure slide accuracy and reliability.
  • Operate and maintain microscopes and tissue processors.
  • Examine slides for tissue abnormalities and structures.
  • Perform H&E, immunohistochemistry, and special stains to aid diagnosis.

Position Highlights

Position: Histology Technician - Per Diem
Location: Swedish Hospital
Full Time/Part Time: Resource, Per Diem
Hours: Monday-Friday, 1st shift, hours vary to 2nd shift, based on dept needs. Must be flexible.

What you will do
  • Conducting tissue specimen processing to incudes: receiving, and preparing tissue specimens for histological examination, as well as embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting on slides.
  • Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of histological slides by adhering to strict quality control measures and protocols.
  • Operating and maintain laboratory equipment, including microscopes and tissue processors.
  • Examine slides to identify tissue abnormalities and cellular structures.
  • Preforming various staining techniques, such as hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, immunohistochemistry, and special stains, to enhance tissue visibility and aid in diagnosis.
Documentation
  • Maintain detailed records of specimen processing, staining procedures, and quality control data.
  • Document any discrepancies and take corrective actions as needed.
  • Monitoring and restocking of laboratory supplies and reagents to ensure continuous workflow.
  • Following safety protocols, including handling hazardous chemicals and biological materials, and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
What you will need
  • Education: Bachelors Degree Required
  • Experience: 1 Year Experience in a Histology Laboratory
  • Certification: Certified Histotechnician (HT) – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or Certification: Certified Histotechnologist (HTL) – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC)
  • Required Unique or Preferred Skills: Working knowledge with Benchmark Ultra and Special Stainer, and Sakura Tissue Processing and Staining Systems
