Job summary

WakeMed is seeking a Histology Technician II to assist pathologists in preparing tissue specimens for diagnostic evaluation. The role includes documenting specimen accession, gross description, processing tissue blocks, and creating slides for microscopic review.

Additional duties include preparing specimens for consultations, maintaining equipment quality control, and training staff in histology techniques. This position supports WakeMed Health & Hospitals in the Raleigh community.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certificate in histology required.
• Associate's degree in science preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist pathologists in preparing tissue specimens for gross examination and description.
• Process tissue blocks to provide slides for microscopic evaluation.
• Prepare specimens for consultations and reference work; perform routine maintenance and QC on laboratory equipment.
• Train personnel unfamiliar with histology techniques and theory.

Job description

Overview

The Histology Technician II assists the pathologists in preparing tissue specimens for pathological diagnosis by documenting the accession of specimens, preparing the tissue for gross examination and description, processing tissue blocks to provide slides of tissue for microscopic evaluation. Processes frozen sections, biopsies, and bone marrow biopsies and performs special stains as needed. Files tissue blocks and slides for reference and participates in training of personnel unfamiliar with any aspect histological technique andtheory. Prepares specimens for consultations and reference work. Performs routine maintenance and quality control on all laboratory equipment and assists in trouble-shooting problems which may arise with technical equipment or procedures.
