Job summary

Avera McKennan Hospital is seeking a Histology Technician to perform standardized histology procedures under supervision, including embedding, cutting, staining, and case distribution. You will assist pathologists with gross exams and bone marrow collection, and may prepare frozen sections for intraoperative diagnosis.

Requires an Associate’s degree with chemistry/biology credits or higher, and ASCP HT eligibility within 1.5 years.

Qualifications

• Associate's Transcript showing 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of chemistry and biology (must include credit hours in both) or a Bachelor's with 12 semester hours of chemistry/biology.
• Some College acceptance into an accredited histology certification program.
• Histotechnician (HT) - ASCP within 1-1/2 Yrs

Responsibilities

• May perform routine histology techniques including embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, labeling, and case distribution.
• May perform special histology and/or cytology specimen processing procedures including muscle and nerve biopsy prep, fine needle aspiration, immunohistochemical staining, histochemical stains, and bone marrow processing.
• Accessions specimens into computer system.
• Assists pathologist or pathology assistant in gross examination of tissue specimens and in obtaining bone marrow specimens.
• May perform gross on select specimens under supervision.
• May prepare frozen sections, and other immediate attention specimens for intraoperative diagnosis.
• May perform miscellaneous tasks including maintenance, specimen filing, sending reference lab specimens and preparing reagents or solutions.
• Assists with student teaching and training and with quality assurance projects.

Pay Range

The pay range for this position is listed below. Actual pay rate dependent upon experience.

$25.50 - $38.00

Position Highlights

Required Education

Associate's Degree (minimum) with 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biology (must include credit hours in both.) A Bachelor Degree with 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biology is also acceptable.

Schedule

8 hour day shifts. Start times ranging from 3:30 am- 9:30am. Includes rotating every 4th Saturday, as well as rotating holidays and weekend call involvement.

This position may be eligible for a $15,000 sign on bonus.

This position is eligible for Avera's Student Loan Repayment Program which helps you pay off your loans and save money. Each month an extra payment of $167 (up to $10,000) from Avera will help pay down your principle balance faster

A Brief Overview

What You Will Do

• May perform routine histology techniques including, but not limited to: tissue embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, labeling, and case distribution.
• May perform special histology and/or cytology specimen processing procedures including but limited to muscle and nerve biopsy preparation, fine needle aspiration, immunohistochemical staining, histochemical stains, and bone marrow processing.

• Assists pathologist or pathology assistant in performing gross examination of tissue specimens. Assist Pathologist and/or Clinician in obtaining bone marrow specimens.
• May perform gross on select specimens under the supervision of the Pathologist.
• May prepare frozen sections, and other immediate attention specimens for intraoperative diagnosis.
• May perform miscellaneous tasks including but not limited to: routine maintenance, specimen filing, sending reference lab specimens and preparing reagents or solutions.
• Assists with student teaching and training.
• Assists with quality assurance and continuous quality improvement projects.

Required Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience

Preferred Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience

• 1-3 years of full time, acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory from an accredited laboratory within the last five years
