Job summary

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification.
  • 3 years of experience in histology or related field.
  • HT or HTL certification preferred (ASCP).
  • Strong communication and teaching abilities for mentoring staff.
  • Certification/LICENSING: ASCP-HTL or ASCP-HT as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises daily functions of the histopathology laboratory to ensure efficiency.
  • Prepares schedules, coordinates job assignments, and monitors personnel.
  • Oversees equipment maintenance records and preventive maintenance scheduling.
  • Assists with budgeting and long-term capital planning for supplies and equipment.
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures for the histopathology lab.
  • Ensures OSHA and CAP safety standards compliance.
  • Stays current with histopathology trends through literature review and continued education.
  • Performs delegated duties as defined by the facility CLIA Director.

Job Summary

The Supervisor of Histology manages the daily operations of the Histopathology Laboratory, ensuring regulatory and safety requirements are met. The role supervises staff, including work assignments, hiring/termination, performance reviews, orientation, and professional development.

Essential Functions of the Role
  • Supervises the daily functions of the histopathology laboratory to ensure it runs efficiently.
  • Prepares schedules, coordinates job assignments, and monitors personnel including selection, orientation, training, evaluations, discipline, and discharge of employees.
  • Oversees equipment maintenance records and schedules preventative maintenance for equipment including microscopes, microtomes, strainers, ovens, and cryostats.
  • Assists with budgeting, provides information about supplies, personnel, and equipment; seeks avenues of cost containment and plans long‑term purchases or capital equipment.
  • Develops, recommends, implements, and maintains policies and procedures related to the histopathology laboratory.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety standards established by OSHA and CAP.
  • Remains knowledgeable of trends in Histopathology through review of current literature and continuing education.
  • Performs all delegated functions as defined by facility CLIA Director.

Qualifications
  • Education: Associate’s degree or 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification.
  • Experience: 3 years of experience.
  • Preferred Experience: HT or HTL certified with strong technical skills in histology, IHC, special stains, and instrumentation quality control. Grossing experience is preferred.
  • Clear and direct communicator who can teach and mentor others.
