Job summary

UTHealth Houston is seeking a Histotechnician III to perform advanced histology laboratory procedures including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide preparation to support accurate pathology diagnoses.

The role requires Mohs training, 5 years of histotechnician experience, and an Associate's degree. The candidate will ensure compliance with SOPs and assist with quality control and continuous improvement initiatives.

Position Summary:

Assists in the day-to-day operations of the laboratory with regard to histology specimen processing. Processes and prepares patient tissue according to department procedures using a wide range and depth of technical and specialized knowledge. Participates in laboratory operations as needed. Supports continuous improvement of laboratory services to ensure high quality and timely pathology for quality diagnosis.

Position Key Accountabilities:
  • Performs tissue processing, embedding in paraffin, and cutting, sectioning, staining, and mounting on slides for interpretation by a pathologist.
  • Provides technical guidance, and advice, to the Histology staff on procedures and troubleshooting. Adapts existing protocols to optimize results.
  • Sets up equipment, instruments and apparatus for specific laboratory procedures for routine to advanced and specialized histology techniques.
  • Maintains quality control and determines suitability of results/materials for release to requesting individuals.
  • Performs slide preparation according to SOP guidelines.
  • Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning or performing scheduled equipment and instrument maintenance / calibration / certifications, as required.
  • Assists with quality control standards in the laboratory.
  • Helps maintain blocks and/or slides files.
  • Complies with all departmental SOPs and adheres to all rules and protocols.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
  • None
  • Work may involve handling biohazardous, chemical, and radiological materials, as well as operating associated equipment. Required safety training and appropriate engineering and administrative controls including the use of personal protective equipment must be followed.
  • Certified Histotechnician (HT(ASCP)) by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required
Minimum Education:

Associate's Degree required

Minimum Experience:

5 Years Of Experience As a Histotechnician Required

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code 51.215 and Texas Government Code 411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code 117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position. Personnel in such positions, and similarly situated state contractors, will be routinely reviewed to determine whether things such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the applicant, employee, or contractor from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure. A foreign adversary is a nation listed in 15 C.F.R. 791.4. Residency Requirement:

  • 51.215 and Texas Government Code
  • 411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code
