Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital is seeking a Histology Assistant to support the Anatomic Pathology department. Responsibilities include accessioning, technical preparation of specimens, slide staining, and assisting pathologists.

This on-site role requires attention to detail and familiarity with cytology and histology procedures. Qualifications include a high school diploma or an associate degree in a related field, with healthcare training or lab coursework preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, from an accredited institution preferred, OR education/training equivalent.
  • 60 semester hours or equivalent including 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology or 24 semester hours of science with chemistry/biology credits and related lab training.

Responsibilities

  • Completes gross description and dictation of simple surgical specimens.
  • Picks up pathology specimens from hospital locations.
  • Entries data into LIS, prints labels and work lists, and handles billing.
  • Assists pathologists and cytotechnologists as needed.
  • Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides.
  • Prepares frozen sections including cutting and staining.
  • Monitors inventory and follows storage and disposal policies.

Shift Monday-Friday 9am-530pm , rotating call for weekend/holidays

Status Full time, 40 hours a week

Description: Primary responsibilities include performing all necessary procedures pertaining to accessioning and technical preparation of all pathology specimens. This individual must function with a high degree of technical expertise regarding handling of specimens to ensure accuracy of diagnoses made from specimens submitted for evaluation.

  • Completes Gross description and dictation of simple surgical specimens.
  • Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc.
  • Responsible for proper handling, accessioning, and billing of all pathology specimens through entering data into the LIS computer application.
  • Prints labels and work lists.
  • Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff, and pathologists as needed.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of Cytology preparations and procedures including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's, using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety.
  • Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques.
  • Prepares frozen sections including cutting and staining.
  • Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants in designated procedures.
  • Distributes slides and paperwork to cytotechnologists or pathologists.
  • Monitors inventory for Pathology areas.
  • Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions, and reports.

Education

  • High school diploma or
  • Associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution preferred, OR
  • Education/training equivalent to the above that includes the following:

60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical technology in any combination AND

Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

Experience

  • One year experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology.
