Job summary

Advocate Health in Winston-Salem, NC is seeking a Histology Lab Technician to join the Dermatology Surgery team on the 1st shift. The role is full-time, 40 hours per week, with no weekends, holidays, or on-call duties.

The position requires an associate degree or equivalent training, with three years of experience in a clinical histology lab preferred and HT (ASCP) certification preferred. You will handle accessioning, labeling, processing, staining, and other anatomic pathology duties.

Responsibilities

• Accessioning, labeling and billing of specimens accurately and timely
• Processing and staining specimens according to departmental practices
• Identify specimens and ensure accurate results in patient workflows
• Perform special stains and enzymatic stains as required
• Carry out additional Anatomic Pathology lab procedures
• Pursue ongoing education to improve skills
• Support smooth operation of the section and department
• Follow policies to prevent spread of bloodborne and airborne diseases
• Promote professional image of the laboratory in line with hospital standards

Education/Experience/Certifications to Qualify:

• Associate's degree in applied science or high school diploma/GED with two years training as defined by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Society of Histotechnology.
• Three years' experience in a clinical histology lab preferred.
• HT (ASCP) certification preferred.

Essential Functions

• Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
• Assures accurate and timely accessioning, labeling and billing of specimens, according to departmental practices.
• Assures accurate and timely processing and staining of specimens, according to departmental practices.
• Provides maximum care in identification procedures when processing patient specimens.
• Performs special stains and/or enzyme histochemical stains.
• Performs additional Anatomic Pathology Department laboratory procedures.
• Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education.
• Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department.
• Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of bloodborne and/or airborne diseases.
• Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Strong, effective oral, written, and listening communication skills.
• Manual dexterity, eyes and hand coordination.
• Familiarity with computers in order to perform basic data entry.
• Technical ability and interest.
• Ability to work independently.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens or patients.
• Exposure to risk of bloodborne/airborne disease.
• Subject to cuts from microtome knives.
• Exposure to hazards for electrical/mechanical/power equipment.
• Possible exposure to odorous chemicals and specimens.
• Possible exposure to toxic/flammable/explosive chemicals and gases.
• Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment.
• Moderate noise environment.
• Subject to injury from sharps.
• Subject to many interruptions and stressful situations.
