Job summary

Prime Healthcare is seeking a Health Information Management Technician III to serve as the designated contact for release of patient health information, including legal medical records. You will ensure requests are processed within mandated timeframes and maintained in HIPAA compliance, while supporting billing and audits.

Responsibilities include ensuring complete charts, performing chart analysis with clinicians, and handling complex requests such as subpoenas while maintaining documentation

Qualifications

• Minimum one year HIM experience in acute care setting required.
• Minimum six months direct release of information duties required.
• Accurate alphabetic, numeric, and/or terminal-digit filing skills.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulatory requirements for medical staff documentation preferred.
• Data entry with 10-key and typing speed 35 wpm preferred.
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Training in state Consent Law and HIPAA Privacy/Security highly desired.

Responsibilities

• Ensure patient charts are complete and accurate by checking for missing reports, unsigned orders, and incomplete discharge summaries, and work with providers to resolve issues.
• Perform chart analysis and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and staff to correct documentation so records support quality care and billing.
• Process requests for medical records from patients, attorneys, insurers, and government agencies while safeguarding information under HIPAA and hospital policies.
• Handle complex or legal requests such as subpoenas, audits, or court orders, making sure all are addressed within required timeframes and properly documented.
• Monitor compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, state laws, and hospital policies by reviewing data and preparing records for audits or inspections.
• Use EMR systems like Epic to update and maintain records, resolve data issues, train HIM Tech I and II staff, and support coding and vital records reporting.
