Job summary

Cottage Health seeks a HIM Coder III for its Health Information Management department to code and abstract inpatient and outpatient data, using official guidelines and coding books. This role ensures accurate administrative and clinical data reporting across services, including specialty areas as needed.

The coder will work closely with clinicians and CDI staff, participate in audits and training, and contribute to maintaining high data quality and compliance standards across Cottage Health’s

• Experience with ICD-9-CM and CPT coding classifications in acute care.
• Familiarity with UHDDS reporting requirements and coding guidelines.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, pharmacology and physiology.

Responsibilities

• Code and abstract inpatient and outpatient conditions, diseases, encounters, SDOH and PCS/CPT procedures.
• Assign DRG/APC classifications reflecting inpatient severity and illness for various services.
• Collaborate with clinicians and CDI staff; assist with internal coding audits and training.

Job description

Cottage Health seeks a HIM Coder IIIfor their CH Health Information Management department responsible for coding and abstracting inpatient and outpatient conditions, diseases, reason for encounters, social determinants of health and PCS/CPT procedures to report accurate administrative and clinical data, utilizing approved coding guidelines as set forth in Official Coding Guidelines, ICD Book, Coding Clinic for ICD-CM/PCS, AHA Coding Clinic for HCPCS and CPT Book. Assigns appropriate DRG/APC prospective payment systems and classifications, to reflect the appropriate severity and illness for inpatient and specialty cardiac, neurology, and vascular outpatient encounters. Collaborates closely with clinicians and CDI staff, not excluding inpatient rehab coordinators to obtain appropriate documentation, as needed. Assists with internal coding audit and training activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

• Minimum: Formalized education that provides knowledge and experience in the following areas: 1) Assigning ICD-9-CM and CPT coding classifications in an acute care setting; 2) UHDDS reporting requirements; 3) Medical terminology, anatomy, chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, and disease process.
• Preferred: Associates Degree Health Information Management.

*Pay for non-physician positions is determined based on related years of experience and internal equity. Eligible employees may also receive additional forms of compensation, including shift differentials, on-call pay, incentive pay, and bonus opportunities, where applicable.
