Job description

This is entry-level work involving the basic and safe operation of light construction equipment. Employees in this classification must undergo training to become proficient in the operation of equipment specific to their work unit. Employees in this class will provide routine and minor service and maintenance to equipment, and perform less skilled tasks when not operating equipment. Work assignments are given in detail, and work is closely supervised and inspected regularly by supervisory personnel. Employees who satisfactorily complete the trainee level of this classification will be eligible for non-competitive promotion to Equipment Operator.

The working hours for this position will be Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM-3:00 PM; however, as a critical employee, will be expected to be on-call 24/7/365 for emergencies.

Examples of Work

• Will be trained and must become proficient in the operation of specific equipment such as rubber tire loader, backhoe, paver, skid loader, and others as assigned.
• Adheres to safety rules and regulations.
• Services and checks equipment daily, performing minor repairs and adjustments to ensure maximum efficiency.
• Moves equipment between locations using a diesel dump truck with trailer.
• Loads and unloads equipment as necessary.
• Performs duties below or equal to the classification when not operating equipment.
• Assists in snow removal and is on 24-hour call during snow storms or emergencies.
• May lead a crew on occasion.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

• Ability to learn and operate assigned equipment proficiently, understanding operator manuals.
• Performs routine adjustments and minor maintenance safely.
• Passes qualifying exams to operate equipment like loaders and backhoes safely.
• Follows directions and can climb, kneel, reach, and stand for extended periods.
• Capable of lifting and moving heavy objects.
• Operates relevant motor vehicles and equipment.
• Uses various computer systems including timekeeping and e-learning platforms.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or vocational-technical certification.
• One year of general laboring experience, including basic equipment operation.
• Valid Class "C" driver’s license; must obtain Class "A" CDL with restrictions and endorsements within six months of hire.

Safety and Conditions

• Must comply with OSHA, MOSH, and local safety policies.
• Work involves hazards typical of construction sites, heavy equipment, and traffic, with exposure to weather conditions.
• Must respond to emergencies 24/7, including snow removal and storms.
