Job summary

Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Technician Associate in Clarinda to support maintenance and safety of Iowa roadways. You will perform a variety of tasks from mowing, signage, to snow equipment operation, contributing to safe and reliable interstates and highways.

Position requires CDL permit within 5 months, a strong safety focus, and willingness to work in varying weather conditions. Training and federal/state compliance support provided.

Qualifications

• CDL permit or CDL within probationary period.
• Ability to operate and maintain DOT equipment safely.

Responsibilities

• Mow and maintain roadways to keep highways safe.
• Install signs and assist with pavement projects as needed.
• Operate snow equipment during winter weather.
• Perform routine maintenance on DOT vehicles and equipment.
• Assist bridge and paint crews and participate in traffic control for maintenance.

As a Highway Technician Associate, you’ll spend your days doing a variety of tasks to make Iowa highways and interstates safer while fulfilling our Mission - Making Lives Better Through Transportation . Everything you do in this role will help contribute to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Core Values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception alongside your teammates . One day might be repairing pavement, the next might be installing signs, or be out plowing snow. No two days are exactly alike!

Location

Clarinda Maintenance Garage - Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from the assigned work location.

Shift

7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and are subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.

No matter the weather conditions, you’ll keep the roads safe by:

• mowing/cutting brush
• disposing of litter and debris
• repairing roadside waterways
• operating snow equipment
• grading/paving projects
• assisting paint/bridge crews
• participating in traffic control for Maintenance activities
• performing routine maintenance and service of DOT equipment and vehicles
• using DOT technical devices and software applications
• completing other duties as assigned

Requirements

• A CDL permit upon hire.
• Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.

Entry-level driver Training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT. The multifaceted training will help meet all state and federal regulations.

• A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
• A pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
• A pre-employment drug screen and will be required to participate in ongoing random drug and alcohol testing programs.
• May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

• Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
• A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where one year of high school education equals one year of full-time work in highway maintenance or equipment operation.
