Job Summary

Under general supervision, operate heavy highway construction equipment—including Gradall excavator, screed‑powerbox, asphalt laydown machine, grader, dozer, scraper, crane, and haul truck—to excavate and grade, erect structural and reinforcing steel, and pour concrete as part of county road construction and maintenance projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Operate complex highway construction equipment on county road construction and maintenance projects.
• Operate motor patrol to finish top (bluetop) grade and finish slopes.
• Operate bulldozer to move dirt, prepare bridge foundations, or make floodway channel improvements.
• Operate asphalt laydown machine in conjunction with other heavy equipment to maintain, repair, and construct paved road surfaces.
• Inform supervisor of repair needs; perform field repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment, including pre‑check for proper fluids and lubricants.
• Train others on equipment operation.
• Operate equipment normally assigned to a lower classification.
• Perform labor duties as a member of a road/bridge crew as necessary.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Skill in operating heavy construction equipment safely, conforming to construction standards and specifications, adjusting equipment, performing preventive maintenance, and training others. Knowledge of functions, operating methods, care requirements for a wide variety of heavy equipment; road surfacing materials and paving processes; equipment hazards; traffic laws and regulations; training methods; safety rules; and departmental policies. Ability to detect needed equipment repair, follow oral and written instructions, estimate materials, read blueprints and grade stakes, work independently, and maintain the physical stamina required for heavy manual labor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education equivalent to graduation from a standard four‑year high school and six years of heavy equipment operation experience in highway and bridge construction or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Class B CDL, Tanker.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequently sit, use hands, reach, talk, and hear. Occasionally stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration. Frequent exposure to high, precarious places. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. Loud noise level.
