The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring multiple Transportation Generalist positions which may be located at any of the following Metro Truck Station locations: Camden (Minneapolis), Cedar Nights (Richfield), Chaska, Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, Lakeville, Maryland Nights (St. Paul), Mendota Heights Nights, Plymouth.
The Transportation Generalist maintains and reconstructs roadways; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, guardrail repair, and maintains roadsides. In addition, this position will perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operate tractor mowers and small rollers; remove objects from roadways; set up traffic controls in high volume traffic and work associated with accidents, spill cleanup, rut repair, dead deer, etc. Additional duties include but are not limited to:
The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is also seeking to fill multiple Transportation Associate positions which may be located at any of the following Metro Truck Station locations: Cedar Nights (Richfield), Eden Prairie, Forest Lake, Maryland Nights (St. Paul), Mendota Heights Days, Mendota Heights Nights, Oakdale Nights, Plymouth, Shakopee, and Spring Lake Park.
The Transportation Associate is a trainee position with a 12-month probationary period. This position exists to learn to perform road surface maintenance and snow and ice control activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe, clear and in good repair according to MnDOT standards; and performs related work as required.
The days of work, shift, normal and holiday work hours will vary depending on the requirement of each individual truck station (i.e., day shift, evening shift, overnights, or night shift as well as weekdays and weekends). Hours will include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations and seasonal assignments. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one hour of being called.
The shift differential for employees working on assigned shifts which begin before 6:00 A.M. or which end at or after 6:00 P.M. shall be two dollars and twenty-five cents ($2.25) per hour for all hours worked before 6:00 A.M. or after 6:00 P.M. on that shift. Such shift differential shall be in addition to the employee's regular rate of pay and shall be included in all payroll calculations but shall not apply during periods of paid leave. An employee who requests and is approved by their supervisor to work before 6 A.M. or after 6 P.M., shall not be eligible for the shift differential.
Maintenance employees working night shifts of durations lasting three (3) months or more, covered by this agreement, shall receive Night Premium Pay of $2.00/hour for all shifts which start between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm. This will apply to all hours worked between the hours of 7:00 pm and 5:30 am. Such premium pay shall be in addition to the employee's hourly rate of pay, and any shift differential the employee would otherwise be entitled to. The premium pay shall be included in all payroll calculations for shifts actually worked, but shall not apply during periods of paid leave, or in calculations of back-pay.

Successful candidates for both the Transportation Generalist and Transportation Associate positions will be required to pass a computerized ACT math and reading test as part of the hiring contingencies. The required passing score for the math portion is a level 3 or higher and the reading portion is a level 4 or higher.
The physical demands of this job will vary but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing. May require frequent exposure to weather elements year-round (cold and hot) daily, as well as working near traffic and heavy equipment. All job offers are contingent upon the candidate passing a Criminal Background Check, SEMA4 Records Check, Physical Exam, Drug Screening, Employment Verification, Reference Checks and Driver's License Screening at the required level for the position with NONE of the following: a major traffic conviction in the past 5 years OR 4 or more minor violations OR 3 or more at-fault accidents in the last 3 years OR any combination of minor violations and at-fault accidents totaling 4 or more occurrences.
The incumbents will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a preplacement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).
Incumbents will be required to immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called in the event of an emergency and/or snow and ice event.
