Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a crew leader to coordinate construction, repair, and preservation activities of roads within assigned areas. The role includes installing and replacing highway signs, pavement markings, and traffic devices.

You will lead a crew, conduct job hazard and tailgate safety meetings, ensure traffic control standards are met, and assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, which may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Qualifications

• Two years of related work experience or equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Class A CDL must be obtained within six months of placement.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Job description

Serves as crew leader coordinating various construction, repair and preservation activities of roads within assigned areas. Installs and replaces highway regulatory, destination and advisory signs. Assists in conducting job hazard and tailgate safety meetings. Ensures that traffic control standards are met. Installs pavement markings and markers. Erects barricades and other traffic devices. Supervises crew as necessary, performing emergency/hazardous weather operations. Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.

Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 5O lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
