Job summary

Milwaukee County Department of Transportation seeks a Highway Maintenance Worker II for a seasonal winter assignment (Nov–Apr). This full-time temporary role requires a CDL Class B with no airbrake restriction and the ability to operate a range of heavy construction equipment on state, county, and interstate highways.

Responsibilities include road maintenance, snow removal, pothole and bridge upkeep, vegetation control, traffic control per MUTCD, and safety repairs under supervision.

Qualifications

• Current resident of Wisconsin.
• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Valid Wisconsin CDL with Class B Endorsement and no airbrake restriction at time of application.
• Able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 60 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Operate various forms of construction equipment and perform highway maintenance on State, County, and Interstate Highways.
• Snow removal and de-icing on highways, including plowing and patrolling during winter.
• Pothole repair, pavement and bridge maintenance, and related prep work.
• Grass mowing, tree removal, culvert/ditch maintenance, and debris clearing.
• Traffic control for lane closures in accordance with MUTCD guidelines.
• Repair safety appurtenances such as guard rails and barriers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Highway Maintenance Worker II -Temporary Assignment (Full Time)

Hourly Pay Range: $23.92 - $35.88

This position requires the ability to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays as required. This is a seasonal position for the winter season from approximately November to April.* This position also offers medical insurance benefits.

Job Summary: Under supervision of the Highway Management and Supervisory Staff, the Highway Maintenance Worker will perform unskilled or semi-skilled construction related labor in highway maintenance division on State, County, and Interstate Highways.

Essential Responsibilities

• Equipment operation and road maintenance: Operate various forms of construction equipment including but not limited to: dual axel and tandem axle dump trucks, milling machines, front end loaders, vac-alls, roller compactor, anti-icing units, sewer jetter, tar kettle, and various mower sand bucket trucks. Check lights, fluids, and overall vehicle condition, wash vehicles, and maintain flail mowers, vac-alls, tar kettles, arrow boards, road work signs, and hand tools.
• Snow removal: Apply chemicals, anti-ice, and salt. Snowplow using dual axle or tandem axle dump trucks, front end loaders, and rubber tire skid steers. Perform winter road patrolling and snow fence installation.
• Bituminous pavement and concrete repair and bridge maintenance: Mill and air hammer asphalt for prep and replacement, remove concrete slabs, perform prep and replacement, perform pothole repair and shoulder repair and maintenance, and use other construction related equipment.
• Grass mowing, tree removal, pruning and culvert and ditch maintenance: Mow grass on Interstate, State, and County trunk Highways and Rights-of-Way. Perform median mowing and trimming with various mowers. Cut and chip trees along state and county roads and interstates; clean culverts and ditches of debris to ensure proper water flow, and maintain gas trimmers and chainsaws.
• Traffic control: Sign and cone for lane and road closures on Interstate, State, and County Trunk Highways in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Safety appurtenance repair: Repair guard rail barrier walls, tau systems, smart cushions, attenuator barrels, and fences.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• Current resident of Wisconsin.
• Possession of a High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Valid Wisconsin CDL with Class B Endorsement and no airbrake restriction REQUIRED at the time of application, and able to be maintained during employment.
• Able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 60lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous construction experience.
• Previous experience driving CDL rated vehicles or equipment.
