Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an equipment operator to perform roadway and right‑of‑way maintenance. You will operate tandem and single axle dump trucks, skid steers, tractors with mowers, and other heavy equipment, and you’ll conduct safety inspections and basic preventive maintenance.

A valid CDL‑A is required on entry or within six months of placement; expected shifts may include extended hours or 12‑hour days and potential emergency weather response.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience.
• Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operates medium-sized equipment including tandem dump trucks, skid steers, tractors with large mowers in roadside and ROW maintenance.
• Performs skilled manual labor such as removing fallen trees and trimming limbs; may direct mowing and right-of-way clearing operations.
• Conducts safety inspections and ensures preventative maintenance to prolong equipment life.
• Operates heavier equipment and assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Job Responsibilities

Operates medium sized equipment such as tandem dump truck, skid steer, tractor with large mower (> l0'wide), and combination tractor with side mounted mowers in roadside and right-of-way management operations and highway and bridge maintenance operations. Performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees on rlght-of-way and low hanging limbs over roadway. May assist with directing mowing and right - of-way clearing operations. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Operates and maintains powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance related to assigned tasks such as tree and vegetation removal, cleaning pipes and ditches, limb trimming, weed eating, facility maintenance, litter and dead animal removal. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Ensures the preventative maintenance of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to ensure equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates heavier equipment such as a motor grader backhoes, slope mowers and other specialized mowing equipment for maintaining and clearing vegetation and debris. Operates both portable tank mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
