Job description

Operates heavy equipment slope mowers in roadside and right-of-way vegetation management operations. Operates lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees on right-of-way and low hanging limbs over roadway. May assist with directing mowing and right-of-way clearing operations. Operates medium equipment such as tractor with batwing mowers, combination tractor with side mounted mowers, skid steer. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailer. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to South Carolina Department of Transportation Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
