Job summary

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience; or relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.
• Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Occasional extended hours or 12-hour shifts during inclement weather.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as slope mower, lowboy tractor, tractor with ditcher loader, excavator, motor grader, and backhoe in maintenance operations.
• Use pipe washer equipment to clean drainage ditches and pipes.
• Install or repair sideline and crossline pipe, driveways, and clear rights-of-way.
• Perform daily preventative maintenance: grease, check fluids, belts, tires, and leaks.
• Assist with safety practices, flagging, and proper PPE for crew members.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices per Work Zone guidelines.
• Maintain daily work records (HMS, maintenance requests) and safety inspections.
• Operate snow/ice removal equipment (salt brine systems, dump trucks, plow) as needed.
• Assist in emergency/weather operations; may require extended hours.

Job Responsibilities

Operates heavy equipment such as slope mower, lowboy tractor, tractor with ditcher loader, excavator, motor grader, and backhoe in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Operates pipe washer equipment to clean out drainage ditches and pipes. Installs, constructs, or repairs sideline and crossline pipe, driveways, and performs right-of-way clearing operations. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration tires are properly inflated and no leakages are present. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to South Carolina Department of Transportation Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers, and lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other duties as assigned.

One (1) year of related work experience; or relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commerical Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
