Job summary

Sumter Maintenance in South Carolina is seeking a hands-on equipment operator to support roadway maintenance and preservation projects. You will operate tandem dump trucks, belt loaders, and rollers, perform related manual labor, and assist with traffic control and emergency responses.

Responsibilities include equipment operation, tool use, and loading materials from the yard. A valid CDL is required within six months, with potential overtime during hazardous weather.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved equivalent.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate tandem dump truck and haul materials to/from the job site (asphalt, soil, pipe, debris).

• Perform skilled manual labor and operate medium equipment for road/bridge maintenance and preservation.

• Assist in setting up traffic control devices and act as flagger when needed.
• Operate front end loader to load materials for the job site.

Job Responsibilities

At Sumter Maintenance, operates medium sized equipment on the work request crew 1 to include tandem dump truck for hauling materials to and from the job site, such as asphalt, soil, pipe, debris and other construction materials. Operates medium equipment such as a belt loader and a large roller during various phases of roadway maintenance. Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium equipment in a variety of activities associated with the maintenance, repair and preservation of roads and bridges to complete work request reported. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools such as a chain saw, weed eater, power drill, leaf blower, asphalt tamper etc. in various phases of roadway maintenance. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger when needed to safely direct traffic and control traffic. Operates front end loader to load materials from yard for hauling to job site to use in various phases of roadway maintenance. Operates a standard dump truck with a snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highway and bridges. Assists with other emergencies as needed.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
