Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking personnel to operate medium duty equipment and assist in road and bridge maintenance on state highways. Responsibilities include litter collection, vegetation management, grading, and concrete work.

Applicants must have at least 6 months of related experience, a valid driver's license, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement. Extended hours or 12-hour shifts may be required in emergencies.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operate medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, belt loaders, and other listed machinery.
• Perform skilled manual labor in road and bridge maintenance: grading, forming, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveways.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones per Work Zone Traffic Control Manual.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations and snow plowing as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Operates medium duty equipment to include tandem dump truck, belt loader, etc., in a variety activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highways when working on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures etc. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Performs skilled manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include grading, setting forms pouring/finishing concrete for curb gutters, sidewalks and driveways. Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as power mowers, weed eaters etc., and powered hand tools when doing yard work at the District Office and the Maintenance Office. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Assists in the operation of the Street Sweeper as needed. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium equipment such as a tandem dump truck with material spreader and a snow plow. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
